Celebrating Pushkin’s birthday


Unquestionably Russia’s greatest poet, Pushkin has always defied good translation. An understandable desire to be faithful to his form and metre has too often resulted in near-doggerel. One example may suffice:


This being the case, Ian Mac Eochagáin shows commendable bravery in organising this event. I think he may surprise us.
