“Do not abandon me now” (Не отходи от меня), Afanasy Fet

A deceptively simple poem, with a very difficult metre for the translator…

Do not abandon me now,
Soulmate remain here with me!
Do not abandon me now:
Heart is enchanted with thee…

Closer than hand in a glove –
Closer than any we cleave;
Of a more passionate love
We’re at a loss to conceive.

If you’re attending to me
Sadly inclining your brow:
Heart is enchanted with thee:
Do not abandon me now!

Не отходи от меня,
Друг мой, останься со мной!
Не отходи от меня:
Мне так отрадно с тобой…

Ближе друг к другу, чем мы,-

Грустно головку склоня,-
Мне так отрадно с тобой:
Не отходи от меня!
