Prayer (Rukous), Saima Harmaja

dark

Winter night above the land
spreads itself in darkness.
From its edge then does its hand
bring forth sigh at starkness.

Oh, if only prayer were strong
over wall now hanging,
where the pain it lingers long,
where the pain’s haranguing.

Stars are lighting up the night,
human limits’ marker.
Don’t, however, candles light
Though the huts are darker,

where the enemy once held
stubbornly to sabre,
where the homely stove was felled
into blood-hot ember.

Righteous Lord, though oft distressed,
Finns their faith were keeping
through the times we’ve been oppressed.
Hear the widow’s weeping,
hear the children’s starving wail!

Anger, Lord, now bury.
Don’t, we beg you, more assail
those already weary.

Where no light adorns the church
there let bells be sounding,
where the mites from hunger lurch
fields let be abounding,
where the stove has cold become
there rekindle embers,
where with suffering heart is numb,
pained our weary members,

look from heaven down on us!
We’re exhausted, feed us!
Reach your mighty hand to us!
Now, O Lord, do lead us!

Talvi-ilta yli maan
pimeänä makaa.
Huokauksen tullessaan
tuo se rajan takaa.

Kunpa vahva rukous
kantais yli muurin,
sinne, miss’ on vavistus,
miss’ on tuska suurin.

Taivaan tähdet syttyvät
yli ihmisrajain.
Mut ei syty kynttilät
pimennossa majain,

joissa kerran vihamies
tarttunut on miekkaan,
joissa sortui kotilies
verenkuumaan hiekkaan.

Sinuun, Herra vanhurskas,
uskoi hädän kesken
Suomen heimo silpomas.
Kuule itku lesken,
kuule lasta nääntyvää!

Herra, vihas peitä.
Älä pirsto enempää
pirstottuja teitä.

Miss’ on kirkko valoton,
siellä soikoon kellot,
missä lasten nälkä on,
lainehtikoon pellot,
miss’ on liesi särkynyt,
sinne liekki uusi,
missä sydän m
urtuu nyt
kovaan rankaisuusi,

sinne katso taivaastas!
Auta nääntyneitä!
Kätes kaikkivaltias
anna! Johda meitä!
