Rays of Light (Просветы), Konstantin Balmont

Konstantin Balmont by Valentin Serov, 1905

A poem from 1922. The rhyme scheme (abb/acc/add/aaa) presented an all but impossible challenge to reproduce.

A moment’s silver glinted flash –
A roach in river’s moment dreaded
Will weave his fables, silver-threaded.

From hill bursts cart in reckless dash,
And through the air his song’s propelling,
And youthful joy in heart is swelling.

And sadness. Itches homespun rash.
For snowbound soul’s new thaw’s beginning.
And joy to weeping’s stream-like spinning.

Like spirit’s depths ends ray-probe’s splash,
A single thought in dreams will thrash –
Of matchless land, your own hearth’s ash.
